I’ve been spending a lot of time at this intersection lately. Normally I will shoot a location until I’m absolutely burnt out on it, but this one feels different. I seem to always look at it in a different way. So, for now I’ll keep being that guy with a camera waiting on a train to pass, while everyone else is shooting their family photos in the same spot.

Side Note: I’ve been shooting a lot lately, but haven’t had so much time to update the blog as regularly as I like. Hopefully after the holidays I’ll have a some more time to do so.

My KansasCity365 project on Instagram is in full swing and will likely drive me crazy at some point. My goal is to show 365 different photos of Kansas City, over the next year. Angela recommended I put all of the photos into a book at the end of a project. so look for details on that next year sometime. Follow along on Instagram, if you already don’t.

How to See Arizona in 48 Hours and Survive

Sierra Estrella Mountain Range

Sunset over the Estrella Foothills

Red Rocks State Park

Switch back up Oak Creek Canyon

Shadow Mountain on the Navajo Reservation

Yaki Point at the Grand Canyon

This is how we did it:

  1. Spent more time in the car than on the ground.
  2. Late to bed. Early to rise.
  3. Survive on gas station food, and an insane amount of water.
  4. Stopped at every scenic outlook, every quarter mile.
  5. Compromise on locations we wanted to see.
  6. Asked locals for the the best routes.
  7. Repeat x2

And we will never, ever, ever do that again. Sure, we saw pretty much the whole state, took thousands of photos, and had an amazing time. But, we never got a chance to really let everything soak in. But, on the bright-side, we know what, and how we want to see everything next time.

So, for next time:

  1. Pick a spot and spend a few days there
  2. Experience the culture
  3. Hike a few trails and climb a few peaks
  4. Relax
  5. Take our time
  6. Enjoy everything around you

And I’m positive the whole experience will be much more memorable.

I spent some time at LaBenite Park last night, a new place for me. It had a nice nature trail, and a conversation area you can camp at with permits only. There were many access points to the river that aloud me to catch a great sunset, and got a few long exposures of the Liberty Bend Bridge. I’m still unsure if I will return to the park. It was a little sketchy and filled with trash. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT! But it has great history and was stop along the Lewis & Clark Expedition and It’s another place to check off my list of places to explore along the Missouri River.

Rivers, Bees, & Bikes

I took a slow and short recovery ride, after feeling under the weather for most of last week, Sunday evening along the Missouri Riverfront Trail. I’ve been exploring this area a quite a bit lately and every time I’m out there I discover more. This time I decided to explore closer to the river for a bit. Then I headed towards a small patch of Musk Thistle (Corduus nutans) and Purple Crown Vetch (Coronilla varia) that I had passed many times while riding. I set up there and enjoyed the sunset and followed a big bumble bee from flower to flower until the light was too dim. From there I jump back on the trail, accompanied by prancing deer and gobbling turkeys, for my short ride back to reality.

Can’t Get Over These Colors!

Last week I ventured up to English Landing Park in Parkville to catch the sunset. There was a beautiful mixture of rain clouds coming in from the west, almost racing the sun as it set, which set up for this amazing sunset. When I went to edit these photos, I was amazed at what little I had to do, to bring out these colors. This was definitely one of my favorite chases of the year.
