Coffee Outside Adventure Ride

Last Sunday we set off another adventure, finding ourselves in a cave on the east side of the city, just so we could enjoy a cup of coffee. It was dark, damp, and had a weird smell. But it was a total blast! Even if I was the slowest rider in the group!

My KansasCity365 project on Instagram is in full swing and will likely drive me crazy at some point. My goal is to show 365 different photos of Kansas City, over the next year. Angela recommended I put all of the photos into a book at the end of a project. so look for details on that next year sometime. Follow along on Instagram, if you already don’t.

How to See Arizona in 48 Hours and Survive

Sierra Estrella Mountain Range

Sunset over the Estrella Foothills

Red Rocks State Park

Switch back up Oak Creek Canyon

Shadow Mountain on the Navajo Reservation

Yaki Point at the Grand Canyon

This is how we did it:

  1. Spent more time in the car than on the ground.
  2. Late to bed. Early to rise.
  3. Survive on gas station food, and an insane amount of water.
  4. Stopped at every scenic outlook, every quarter mile.
  5. Compromise on locations we wanted to see.
  6. Asked locals for the the best routes.
  7. Repeat x2

And we will never, ever, ever do that again. Sure, we saw pretty much the whole state, took thousands of photos, and had an amazing time. But, we never got a chance to really let everything soak in. But, on the bright-side, we know what, and how we want to see everything next time.

So, for next time:

  1. Pick a spot and spend a few days there
  2. Experience the culture
  3. Hike a few trails and climb a few peaks
  4. Relax
  5. Take our time
  6. Enjoy everything around you

And I’m positive the whole experience will be much more memorable.

Grand Boulevard

KCP&L District | Nikon D7200 | Rokinon 16mm | f/22 | ISO 100 | 8sec. 6 exposures

Sprint Center | Nikon D7200 | Rokinon 16mm | f/8 | ISO 1000 | 1/5sec. 3 exposures

“Grand Boulevard” | Nikon D7200 | Rokinon 16mm | f/16 | ISO 100 | 15sec. 12 exposures

Spent another Monday out late walking around the city making photos. Since I picked up a 16mm Rikinon Wide Angle Lens, I’ve been diving back into long exposures, which are always fun to shoot, but, take much longer and I end up with less photos taken by the end of the night. But I feel like the quality of the shot is much better.

This time I walked around Sprint Center and the KCPL district. I was able to get to a really nice spot on top of a parking garage on 11th street. Which I got kicked out of within 30 minutes. I had quiet a few people approach me on the street while shooting, asking me questions, and talking to me about photography. I even helped someone adjust there settings on their camera to pick up a similar shot to what I was doing.

All in all, it was another successful night behind the lens. I can;t wait to get out again and get more long exposures. Also, be sure to check me out on Instagram and flickr, for more photos. I’m also slowly working on updating my Society 6 page, so please be patient.

Tomorrow. We Ride.

Tallgrass Prairie Reserve

Tall Grass Prairie Reserve along the Flint Hills in Kansas.

I’ll be riding the Flint Hills Nature Trail this weekend. Our planned route is over 200 miles over the course of three days trough the Flint Hills of Kansas. Can’t wait to get lost behind the lens and on two wheels for a few days.

Spent part of our Sunday Funday checking out the old Clay/Platte YMCA Angela used to swim at. The building was torn down and all that was left was the outdoor swimming pull. The water was pitch black with an algae growing over most of it, which made for a few dramatic shots.

I will have more photos up on my Instagram and Flickr later this week.

Most of the time you’ll find me shooting at night. Since I work a 9-5, it’s the only time I have time to get out. Kansas City has been blessed with a mild winter, so getting out at night has been a lot more tolerable. These three shot are from one small location I found in Westport a few weeks back. I try to shoot in a series when I go out. I often forget this. Come home and then head back out after reviewing. My edits are inconsistent and I constantly change my style, figuring out new techniques, different ways to shoot a landscape, parking garage, light trails, etc. My art has always been this way. I find it boring to remain constant.
